When video went "portable" everyone jumbed on the band wagon. Here is an ad for the Akai "color" portable system that used 1/4 inch tape. Although manufacturers like Akai, Sanyo, Singer etc. attempted to break into the market they just couldn't compete with Sony and Panasonic that had already captured the 1/2 EIAJ market. Compatibility was a real concern among video users.
