A Recognized Pioneer: A Timeline

Grayson Mattingly: 1968 -- Co-founds Videoforms, one of the seminal companies in the nation to specialize in non-broadcast video.
1969 -- Produces first bank teller training video programs in the country (client: American Security & Trust)
1971 -- Founds Mattingly Productions, Ltd., now the oldest video company in the Washington, D.C. - metro area.
1972 -- Develops the original modular training format for nationwide video production workshops (client:  Knowledge Industry Publications - Video Expo)
the early 1970's -- Designs and sets up some of the first nationwide video systems (clients: GEICO, Food & Drug Administration, Civil Service Administration, and Navy Federal Credit Union)
1973 -- Co-authors Introducing the Single Camera VTR/VCR System, considered a landmark book in the field of helical scan videotape recording (client: Charles Scribner & Sons)
1975 -- Writes the original guidelines for videotaping depositions for the Federal Courts (client: Federal Judicial Center)
1978 -- Adjunct Professor of Media, University of Virginia
also 1978 -- Establishes the Native American Videotape Archives at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, NM, one of the first video archives in the nation (client: Bureau of Indian Affairs)
the early 1980's-- Creates and produces product information videos that garner record sales for VIC 20 and Commodore 64 computers (client: Commodore Computers)
1983-- Produces the first video "user's manual" for the consumer electronics industry (client: Wilson Microwave)
also 1983 -- Authors second book, Expert Techniques for Home Video Production (client: Tab Books, Inc.)
1984 -- Elected Communicator of the Year by the International Television Association
1986 -- Receives First Place Award for the Best Training Product from the National Society for Performance & Instruction for The Ribbon Experience (client: National Office Products Association)
1994 -- Receives Award of Excellence for Outstanding Print-Based Training Program from the National Society for Performance & Instruction for Step by Step: The Mortgage Application Process (client: Navy Federal Credit Union)
1997-- Cindy Award for Consumer Video Category for Home Video Hits: Great Ideas for Creating Better Home Videos (client: Cardozo Productions)

 

Grayson Mattingly is also a recognized video artist whose works have been shown at the Rose Gallery of Art of Brandeis University, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Video Study Center of Global Village, and in a PBS broadcast television program entitled, Video: The New Wave.

In 1984 the International Television Association awarded Grayson their Communicator of the Year Award in recognition of his numerous contributions to the industry. The award citation reads, in part:

"Grayson Mattingly, teacher consultant, author, manager, video artist, communicator. You are a man of vision and leadership. In a field where growth and change are by-words you have consistently been in the vanguard.....One of your favorite expressions is that, ‘Video may provide instant replay, but not instant success.' Instant or not, your efforts have succeeded many times in broadening the base of video communications.

"Representing experienced professional communicators able to perform our tasks more easily and effectively in a world you helped to shape, we are proud to name you our COMMUNICATOR OF THE YEAR 1984."
